Can Skinvive Fill Hollow Cheeks?

Skinvive’s evidence for smoother cheek skin does not establish correction of deep cheek hollows. We explain the distinction, U.S. approval, and injection risks.

Evidence that Skinvive improves cheek skin smoothness does not establish that it can fill deep cheek hollows. At UH CELL Clinic, we distinguish a smoother skin surface from restoring volume in a sunken area. Allergan Aesthetics, the manufacturer, also does not describe Skinvive as a treatment that changes facial shape or volume.

Can Skinvive Fill Hollow Cheeks?

Skin smoothness and volume are different goals

According to Allergan Aesthetics’ U.S. product information, Skinvive delivers tiny droplets of hyaluronic acid into the dermis, a layer of the skin, to improve cheek skin smoothness. A description of improved hydration should not be interpreted as filling the contour of a hollow cheek.

The starting point is to describe the change you want: a smoother skin surface or a change in a sunken cheek contour. These are different treatment goals, even when they concern the same area of the face.

What the clinical evidence establishes

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s 2023 approval overview reports improved cheek skin smoothness in a clinical study involving 209 participants, with the effect lasting at least six months. The U.S. approval is for intradermal injection to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults aged 21 and older.

That finding does not establish correction of deep cheek hollows. The U.S. indication should also not be treated as identical to Korean regulatory labeling or as a determination of an individual patient’s suitability for treatment.

Injection risks belong in the decision

Allergan Aesthetics’ U.S. safety information lists injection-site reactions, including bruising, swelling, and pain. It also lists contraindications involving a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies, as well as allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins or lidocaine. The manufacturer’s patient information additionally lists previous allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers as a contraindication.

Safety during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been established.

The same manufacturer safety information warns that accidental injection into a blood vessel can cause rare but serious complications, including skin necrosis (tissue death), vision impairment, and stroke.

When to seek immediate medical attention

If any of the following occur during or immediately after treatment, alert the treating medical team and seek medical attention immediately:

  • Changes in vision
  • Unusual pain
  • Skin turning white

Start with the change you want

Our emphasis is on defining the goal before choosing a treatment name. If hollow cheeks are your concern, discuss the contour change you want with a clinician rather than treating smoother skin and volume restoration as the same outcome.
