Does Skinvive Fill Hollow Cheeks?

Skinvive’s U.S. approval concerns cheek skin smoothness, not proof of volume replacement for hollow cheeks. Understand the distinction, risks, and eligibility.

We distinguish Skinvive’s role in improving cheek skin smoothness from replacing volume in hollow cheeks. Its U.S. approval addresses skin smoothness, and that evidence does not establish an effect on filling cheek hollows. The starting question is whether you want a change in cheek contour or in the texture of the skin’s surface.

Does Skinvive Fill Hollow Cheeks?

Skin smoothness and cheek volume are different goals

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Skinvive in May 2023 for injection into the dermis, a layer of the skin, to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults over 21. The FDA’s publicly available 2026 directions for use also specify this cheek indication. This describes the U.S. approval, not an assertion that the approved indication in South Korea is identical.

If hollow cheeks are your main concern, evidence for smoother skin alone is not enough to establish that the treatment matches your goal. When discussing treatment, distinguish between “I want smoother skin on my cheeks” and “I want to fill the hollow areas.” Those are different desired changes.

Hyaluronic acid does not tell the whole story

According to AbbVie’s 2023 announcement, Skinvive is a hyaluronic acid injectable containing lidocaine, a local anesthetic. The manufacturer describes improvements in cheek skin smoothness and hydration, distinguishing these from injectables used to fill or augment the treatment area.

Sharing the ingredient name “hyaluronic acid” does not establish that products have the same volume-replacement effect. We keep that distinction central when explaining what Skinvive’s cheek-smoothness evidence does and does not support.

Skin-texture treatment still carries injection risks

The FDA’s publicly available directions for use list reactions including redness, swelling, bruising, pain, and bumps at the injection site. Rarely, inadvertent injection into a blood vessel can lead to serious complications, including vision impairment, blindness, or stroke.

The directions identify warning signs that require immediate attention. If any of the following occur during or shortly after treatment, alert the treating medical team and seek medical care immediately:

  • Changes in vision.
  • Skin turning white.
  • Unusual pain.

What to discuss before treatment

The same FDA directions list a history of anaphylaxis, multiple severe allergies, and allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins or lidocaine as contraindications. Safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding has not been established.

Before treatment, share your allergy history, medications, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding with the medical team so they can assess suitability. Be specific about whether your goal is smoother cheek skin or a change in hollow cheek contours. Skin reactions and recovery time vary between individuals, and diagnosis and treatment planning require consultation with a medical professional.
