If your skin turns pale or you develop unusual pain during or just after filler treatment, seek medical attention immediately. Our message at UH CELL Newsroom is straightforward: you do not need to have both symptoms before acting.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises seeking immediate medical help for any of these warning signs: unusual pain, white, gray or blue skin near the injection site, or vision changes.
Do not wait for the pain to get worse
FDA guidance does not require pain and a skin color change to occur together. A skin color change alone or a vision change alone is enough to seek immediate medical help. Do not delay while waiting for another symptom to appear.
If you notice a change during treatment, tell the treating medical team immediately. The FDA also advises healthcare professionals to stop injecting immediately if these warning signs occur.
Why you should not dismiss these signs as routine bruising or swelling
The FDA lists bruising and swelling among the common side effects of dermal fillers. However, it warns that filler unintentionally injected into a blood vessel can block the vessel and reduce the blood supply to tissue. Reported serious complications include skin necrosis (tissue death), vision problems including blindness, and stroke.
Do not assume a warning sign is ordinary bruising or routine downtime and wait several days. The next step is an immediate medical assessment, not trying to determine the cause at home.
After going home, do not wait for your next appointment
The FDA also advises immediate medical attention for signs of a stroke during or shortly after treatment. These can include sudden difficulty speaking, numbness, or weakness in the face, arms or legs. Vision changes also require action even when there is no pain.
If you notice these warning signs after going home, do not wait for a scheduled follow-up. We urge you to seek medical help immediately rather than waiting for recovery.
