Do Seoul Skin Clinics Require Same-Day Treatment Decisions?

KIM YEONJIN (Dr. JJIN) 대표원장

Korean law lets you get a full skin consultation in Seoul without booking treatment that day. We explain the rule and how to plan a later visit.

Consultation Now, Treatment Later

You are not required to book a procedure on the same day you receive a skin consultation in Seoul. Korean law places the duty to explain a procedure on the doctor, and leaves the decision to proceed entirely to the patient, on any timeline. We accept consultation-only visits at our Gangnam clinic on this basis every week.

Do Seoul Skin Clinics Require Same-Day Treatment Decisions?

We do not ask patients to decide anything in the room. We assess the skin, explain which treatment we would recommend and why, and walk through how many recovery days it needs. What happens after that, whether you book that afternoon or six months later, is a separate decision that belongs to you.

The Law Keeps Explanation and Decision Separate

Article 24-2 of Korea's Medical Service Act requires a doctor to explain the diagnosis, the proposed method, the expected risks and complications, and the likely outcome of not proceeding, before any procedure that carries meaningful risk. The Supreme Court of Korea, in a 1995 ruling, held that the purpose of this duty is to protect the patient's right to make an autonomous, self-determined choice. Nothing in the statute requires the patient to accept or decline in the same sitting where the explanation was given. Taking time to think it over is itself an exercise of that right, not a delay of it.

In practice, this means a consultation and a booked procedure are two different events under Korean law, and treating them that way protects the patient more than bundling them ever would. A rushed yes at the end of a consultation is the outcome the explanation requirement exists to prevent.

Your Consultation Does Not Disappear When You Leave

The Enforcement Rule of the Medical Service Act, Article 15, requires medical institutions to keep patient records for ten years. What we note during a consultation, the skin assessment, the treatment we discussed, and the reasoning behind it, stays on file. Returning months later does not mean starting the diagnosis from zero; we can go back to what was already recorded and confirm what has changed since.

This is a practical detail more than a legal one, but it is the reason a consultation-only visit is not wasted time. The record is the bridge between the visit where you got the information and whatever visit you eventually book to act on it.

Why This Matters More for Patients Visiting From Abroad

Same-day pressure affects overseas patients differently than local ones. A trip to Seoul is often planned around a fixed number of days, and recovery time for some treatments does not fit inside that window. Under this rule, a patient can get the diagnosis and the full explanation now, decide the timing does not work for this trip, and plan the procedure for a later visit instead, without repeating the initial assessment.

Our Gangnam clinic keeps Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreting staff on site, so the explanation itself does not depend on how much Korean the patient speaks. Both our Gangnam and Seocho locations sit inside UHC group hotel buildings, which shortens the travel involved in a consultation-only day: there is no separate trip across the city just to sit through an explanation before deciding anything. For patients weighing whether a short Seoul trip has enough recovery time built in for a given treatment, we have written separately about how to time skin treatments around a short trip to Seoul.

What a Consultation-Only Visit Actually Covers

A consultation at our clinic covers the same ground regardless of whether a procedure follows immediately: skin assessment, the treatment options relevant to that assessment, expected recovery time, and the risks tied to each option under the explanation duty described above. You can leave without signing anything or paying a deposit. If you do decide to proceed on a later visit, the consent process for the procedure itself is a separate step, one we have also detailed in our explanation of what a cosmetic procedure consent form should cover.

Patients who do want to book the same day are welcome to. Both options stay open for every visit, and the decision sits with the patient.

FAQ

Do I need to follow up after a consultation-only visit?

No. A consultation is a complete visit on its own, covering diagnosis and explanation. Booking a procedure afterward is a separate step you take whenever you are ready, if at all.

Can I get a copy of what was discussed in my consultation?

Patients can request to inspect or receive a copy of their own medical records. We ask for identity verification before releasing them, which is standard practice under Korean recordkeeping rules.

Should I still book ahead for a consultation-only visit?

Yes. We need time set aside for the assessment and explanation, and if interpretation is involved, that has to be scheduled alongside the appointment rather than arranged on the spot.

If a long gap passes before I return, do I need a full new diagnosis?

Skin condition changes with season and lifestyle, so we check what has changed since your last visit rather than repeating the full assessment from the start. The prior record still gives us a starting point, which is one reason patients planning a return visit sometimes also read about how far ahead to book a Seoul skin clinic visit.
