Is Skinvive a Filler? Classification vs. Treatment Goals

Skinvive is classified as a hyaluronic acid filler, but its FDA-approved purpose is cheek skin smoothness. We explain the distinction, risks, and what to discuss.

Yes, Skinvive is a filler, but we distinguish its classification from its treatment goal: improving cheek skin smoothness is not the same as filling hollow cheeks. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) describes Skinvive as a hyaluronic acid gel implant, or dermal filler.

Is Skinvive a Filler? Classification vs. Treatment Goals

A filler classification can coexist with a skin-smoothing goal

The FDA's 2023 approval covers injection into the dermis, a layer of the skin, to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults over 21. Calling Skinvive a “skin booster” does not mean it is not a filler. What a product is classified as and what it is injected to achieve are separate questions.

That approval should not be interpreted as evidence for correcting cheek hollows or reshaping facial contours. It also does not mean Skinvive has no effect on volume. The important distinction is between its approved skin-smoothing purpose and an expectation of volume correction.

The term “skin booster” does not remove filler risks

The FDA's dermal filler safety guidance lists bruising, swelling, and pain as possible reactions. Rarely, unintended injection into a blood vessel can cause serious complications, including skin necrosis (tissue death), blindness, or stroke.

If you experience vision changes or unusual pain during or immediately after treatment, seek medical attention immediately.

The FDA's Skinvive information also lists contraindications, meaning conditions in which the product should not be used:

  • An allergy to lidocaine.
  • Hypersensitivity to proteins from gram-positive bacteria.
  • Severe allergies with a history of anaphylaxis, or a history of multiple severe allergies.

Tell the treating medical team about any of these histories before treatment.

Define the change you want before choosing a label

Before a consultation, clarify whether you want to improve rough texture on the surface of your cheeks or add volume to a hollow area. We emphasize the intended change and the risks, rather than relying on the label “filler” or “skin booster.”

The approval described here is a U.S. FDA approval. If you are considering treatment in Korea, do not assume that Korean approval conditions are identical. Review the product's applicable Korean approval and instructions for use with the treating medical team.
