Is Skinvive the Same as Filler for Hollow Cheeks?

Skinvive targets cheek skin smoothness, not volume restoration in hollow cheeks. We explain its US indication, key risks, and what to discuss before treatment.

Skinvive should be understood as a treatment for cheek skin smoothness, not as filler for restoring volume in hollow cheeks. At UH CELL Newsroom, we emphasize separating these two goals before planning treatment: improving the skin’s surface and adding volume to a sunken area.

Is Skinvive the Same as Filler for Hollow Cheeks?

Skin smoothness and cheek volume are different goals

In its 2023 announcement, manufacturer Allergan Aesthetics described Skinvive as a hyaluronic acid injection for improving cheek skin smoothness and hydration, distinguishing it from injections that increase volume in the treated area.

According to the manufacturer’s US product information, Skinvive is FDA-approved for injection into the dermis, a layer of the skin, to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults older than 21. That indication should not be interpreted as approval to restore volume in hollow cheeks. This US approval information should not be used to establish the product’s authorized uses in South Korea.

Skin-quality injections still carry risks

Allergan Aesthetics’ safety information lists reactions including bruising, swelling, and redness. It also warns that accidental injection into a blood vessel can, although rare, cause serious complications such as vision impairment or skin necrosis (tissue death).

The manufacturer advises immediate medical attention for the following symptoms during or shortly after treatment:

  • Changes in vision.
  • Skin turning white.
  • Unusual pain.

If these occur, alert the treating medical team immediately and seek medical care.

The manufacturer also lists contraindications for people with a history of anaphylaxis or multiple severe allergies, or a history of allergies to lidocaine or proteins from gram-positive bacteria. Tell the medical team before treatment if any of these apply to you.

Explain the change you want before choosing treatment

Our official Skinvive introduction describes hydration and skin texture in the context of hyaluronic acid microinjections. For a treatment discussion, we recommend distinguishing between these goals:

  • “I want the surface of my cheeks to look smoother.”
  • “I want to restore volume in the hollow areas of my cheeks.”

If both concern you, explain each separately. Keeping the goals distinct helps clarify what the treatment plan is intended to address, rather than assuming one injection serves both purposes.

Skin reactions and recovery time vary from person to person. Discuss your individual assessment and treatment plan with a medical professional.
