Less Volume After Sculptra: Is It Still Working?

KIM YEONJIN (Dr. JJIN) 대표원장
| Input:

Less fullness after Sculptra does not necessarily mean treatment failed. Distinguish early swelling from gradual changes, and know which symptoms need urgent care.

Looking less full than immediately after Sculptra does not, by itself, mean the treatment has failed. We emphasize distinguishing early swelling from the gradual changes that follow. However, unusual pain, skin color changes, or vision changes call for prompt medical assessment rather than waiting for results.

Less Volume After Sculptra: Is It Still Working?

Early fullness includes swelling

Galderma’s US Sculptra Instructions for Use, revised in June 2023, explain that the water used to reconstitute the product and the injection process can cause swelling immediately after treatment. This can make a hollow area appear sufficiently filled at first.

According to those instructions, this swelling typically subsides within hours to a few days, and the original hollowing may become visible again. A reduction in that initial fullness is therefore not the same as an absence of treatment effect. Equally, swelling going down does not guarantee that the desired result will develop.

Assess changes before deciding on more treatment

The same Galderma instructions describe treatment-related changes as developing gradually over several weeks and advise allowing time before assessing the need for additional correction. Looking less full is not, on its own, a reason to proceed immediately with another treatment. Review how the area is changing with a healthcare professional.

The US instructions should not be read as establishing Korean-approved use or a uniform treatment schedule at our clinic. Whether and when additional treatment is appropriate should be discussed with a healthcare professional based on your individual condition.

Symptoms that should not wait

Galderma warns that the following symptoms during or immediately after treatment require prompt medical assessment:

  • Unusual pain.
  • Skin turning white, also called blanching.
  • Changes in vision.

These may signal serious complications associated with injection into a blood vessel. Do not dismiss them as part of swelling settling down. Notify a healthcare professional immediately and seek medical care.

Skin reactions and recovery times vary from person to person. Discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan with a healthcare professional.
