Shaonü Zhen vs. Shuiguang Zhen: Check the Name First

KIM YEONJIN (Dr. JJIN) 대표원장
| Input:

Shaonü Zhen and Shuiguang Zhen are different injections with different ingredients and injection layers. Dr. Yeonjin Kim explains what each product actually contains and three questions to confirm before your consultation in Seoul.

Shaonü Zhen (少女针) and Shuiguang Zhen (水光针) are nicknames used in Chinese-speaking communities, and they refer to two different injections with different ingredients and different injection layers. Shaonü Zhen points to a PCL (polycaprolactone) microsphere filler, while Shuiguang Zhen points to a sodium hyaluronate solution placed in the dermis. Before you book anything in Korea, confirm the actual product name, ingredient, and injection layer instead of the nickname.

Shaonü Zhen vs. Shuiguang Zhen: Check the Name First

Hello, I'm Dr. Yeonjin Kim, director at UH CELL Clinic's Gangnam branch.

These two nicknames sound similar, and patients sometimes bring one name to a consultation expecting the other product. That mismatch is avoidable. I start every consultation on either of these by confirming the product name first, because the name decides the ingredient, the injection layer, and what the treatment is actually meant to do.

Shaonü Zhen is a collagen-stimulating filler from the Ellansé family

According to China's National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) registration filing for Ellansé, reported by ByDrug in 2021, the product is made of PCL microspheres suspended in a carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier, with glycerin and a phosphate buffer. The registration approves it for subcutaneous injection to correct moderate-to-severe nasolabial folds. In China, this product circulated under the nickname Shaonü Zhen. OFweek reported in 2024 that the NMPA approved a second PCL microsphere filler in the same category, so the nickname Shaonü Zhen no longer points to a single registered product.

Shuiguang Zhen is a hyaluronic acid solution placed in the dermis

Beijing Business Today reported in 2022 that the NMPA's Announcement No. 30 reclassified injectable sodium hyaluronate solution, the main ingredient behind Shuiguang Zhen, as a Class III medical device. The classification defines its purpose as dermal injection for hydration and skin-condition improvement, not volume correction. What Shuiguang Zhen targets is hydration and skin condition, not contour.

Three questions to ask before you book

When you're discussing either injection in a Korean clinic, ask for the three items in the table above by product name, not by nickname.

  • What is the actual product name, and what is its main ingredient?
  • Which layer does it go into, subcutaneous or dermal?
  • What is it registered or indicated for, volume correction or hydration?

Write the name down in a form you can match against other records later, for example the Korean brand name if one applies, such as Ellansé. That makes it easier to compare notes after you've returned home.

Our Gangnam branch, inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, keeps Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreters on site, so you can go through these three checks in your own language or through an interpreter. We diagnose your skin first, and the choice between these two injections is made from that diagnosis, not from a nickname.

Individual skin response and recovery time vary. Please discuss your specific diagnosis and treatment plan with a physician.
