If this is your first time getting a skin treatment in Korea, confirm two things before you book: whether you can receive consultation and aftercare instructions in a language you understand, and how you will handle recovery during a short stay. It also helps to know that foreign patients can use Korea's medical dispute mediation system if something goes wrong.
I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL's Gangnam clinic. About 90 percent of the patients I see come from outside Korea, so these are the two points I walk through first with every new patient.
Interpretation Needs to Cover Consultation and Aftercare, Not Just Check-In
Before a treatment, you need to understand your skin condition, the scope of the procedure, and the expected downtime well enough to agree to it. After the treatment, you need to understand the aftercare instructions and which symptoms mean you should contact the clinic. For both of those, front-desk interpretation is not enough. When you book, ask specifically which language the consultation and the post-treatment instructions will be given in.
At our Gangnam clinic, we have staff on site who can interpret in Japanese, Chinese, and English. If you are weighing whether to book through an agency or directly with a clinic, our comparison of agency booking versus direct booking walks through that decision in more detail.
Plan Recovery Around Where You Are Staying
Redness and swelling settle at different speeds depending on the treatment. If you tell us your departure date during the consultation, we can weigh that against your diagnosis and plan the type and number of treatments around the time you actually have.
Our Gangnam clinic sits on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel building, at Teheran-ro 8-gil 13, WD Building. Treatments take place in private rooms. Guests staying at a UHC hotel can choose one complimentary recovery option: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip.
If Something Feels Wrong, Contact the Clinic That Treated You First
If redness, warmth, or pain is getting worse, or lasts longer than you expected, do not try to manage it yourself. Contact the clinic where you had the treatment so it can be examined directly.
If a dispute comes up that cannot be resolved through that conversation, foreign patients in Korea can turn to the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency. According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, foreign patients are covered under the Medical Dispute Mediation Act. The Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency notes that mediation generally starts only once the medical institution involved agrees to participate.
FAQ
Can I get both the oxygen chamber and the vitamin IV drip?
Guests staying at a UHC hotel can choose one of the two free of charge. If you would like both, the vitamin IV drip costs 55,000 KRW. The full terms are listed on UH CELL's promotion page.
What is the background of the doctor at the Seocho clinic?
Dr. Kim Kyung-su, director of our Seocho clinic at Banpo-daero 16-gil 30, graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine and holds medical licenses in both Korea and Japan.
How do I apply for medical dispute mediation?
According to the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency, you can submit a written application in person, by mail, by fax, or online. You will need basic documents such as a copy of your ID and a copy of your medical records.
Skin reactions and recovery times vary from person to person, so talk with your treating doctor about the plan that fits your case.
