Ellansé, known in parts of Asia as the "少女针," is a polycaprolactone (PCL) filler that restores lost volume and stimulates new collagen, while an HA skin booster places hyaluronic acid into the dermis to improve hydration and texture. If the concern is a hollow or flattened area, Ellansé is usually the closer fit; if the concern is dullness or rough texture, a skin booster usually is. Ellansé has no dissolving enzyme and is difficult to reverse, so either choice should follow a diagnosis of the actual cause rather than a product name a patient has already heard.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic's Gangnam branch. When a patient asks me about both of these at once, I start by checking where and why the face looks the way it does, before I talk about either product. The two injections go into different depths and solve different problems from the start.

How Ellansé Works
Ellansé is made of polycaprolactone (PCL) microspheres, 25 to 50 micrometers across, suspended at 30% in a carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel carrier at 70%, according to a 2022 paper in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology. The product received CE marking as a Class III medical device in Europe in 2009.
The mechanism happens in two stages. The CMC gel fills volume immediately after injection. Over the following months, the PCL microspheres encourage the surrounding tissue to build its own collagen.
That same 2022 paper followed a retrospective series of nine midface patients and found measurable volume increase in every one of them at the two-year mark. It's a small observational series, not a controlled trial, so it's evidence of what can happen rather than a timeline I can promise every patient.
China's National Medical Products Administration separately approved Ellansé-S in 2021 for correcting moderate-to-severe nasolabial folds, which tells us how one regulator has scoped the product's intended use. It doesn't tell us how any individual face will respond.
What an HA Skin Booster Changes
A skin booster takes a different route: fine micro-injections of hyaluronic acid spread across multiple points in the dermis, rather than one filling material.
A 2024 single-center study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology measured a roughly 40% drop in a wrinkle severity score eight weeks after this kind of HA micro-injection, with the improvement easing to about 33% by week twelve. Skin hydration, roughness, and surface glow improved alongside it.
The same study shows the effect softening over time rather than holding flat, which is why I'd rather map out a maintenance schedule with a patient at the first visit than let them assume one session settles the question.
Three Questions to Settle Before Choosing
- Is the problem hollowness or dryness? A sunken temple or flattened cheek points toward Ellansé. Dull, tight-feeling skin with fine texture concerns points toward a skin booster.
- Does it need to be reversible? Ellansé can't be dissolved with an enzyme the way an HA filler can, so a first-time patient is usually safer with a more conservative plan.
- What does the travel schedule look like? Both injections can bring swelling or bruising, so I ask patients to build in recovery days before a flight home rather than scheduling treatment right before departure.
Our Gangnam branch keeps Japanese, Chinese, and English-speaking interpreting staff on hand, so patients can go through these differences and the aftercare instructions in their own language before deciding.
FAQ
Can an HA skin booster also fill in nasolabial folds?
A prospective study of 81 volunteers published through the U.S. National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central found that HA skin boosters aren't designed to reshape contours or restore deep folds. A deeper nasolabial fold is usually diagnosed and discussed as a separate question with other options on the table.
Can I get this explained in my own language?
Yes. The Gangnam branch has interpreting staff for Japanese, Chinese, and English, so you can confirm the differences between these two treatments and the precautions involved before you commit to either one.
What symptoms after treatment mean I should contact the clinic?
Contact us if redness, warmth, and pain appear together, or if a lump you can feel under the skin hasn't gotten smaller after several weeks. Don't press on it or apply heat on your own. Come in for a proper diagnosis instead.
Skin response and recovery time vary from person to person. For an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan, please consult a physician directly.
