Hello, I’m Dr. KIM YEONJIN, representative director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam branch. If you’re traveling from the United States to Seoul for treatment and plan to use a credit card issued outside Korea, here is what I recommend checking before you leave.

What Korea’s travel guidance says about credit cards

According to the Korea Tourism Organization’s currency and exchange guidance, most businesses in Korea, including major hotels, department stores and general shops, accept credit cards. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are among the card networks it lists.

This is general guidance about businesses in Korea, not a statement specifically about medical clinics. I would not read “most businesses” as “every clinic.” Confirming acceptance with the clinic you plan to visit is still an important step.

Three things to check before you travel

• International use: Check your card issuer’s app or contact customer service to confirm that your card is enabled for use abroad.
• Card network: Identify whether your card uses Visa, MasterCard, American Express or another network. When booking your appointment, ask whether the clinic accepts that network.
• Your issuer’s terms: Ask your card issuer about foreign transaction fees and spending limits before departure. These conditions vary by card and can affect the amount you are charged and whether a payment is approved.

If your stay is short, I also suggest considering a backup card on a different payment network.
