Skinvive for Hollow Cheeks: Texture Versus Volume

KIM YEONJIN (Dr. JJIN) 대표원장
| Input:

Skinvive evidence supports smoother cheek skin, not correction of hollow cheeks. Understand the treatment goal, FDA findings, and important injection risks.

Evidence that Skinvive improves cheek skin smoothness should not be read as evidence that it fills hollow cheeks. At UH CELL Newsroom, we distinguish skin texture from cheek shape and volume. If your goal is to fill a hollow contour, the skin-smoothing findings below do not establish that benefit.

Skinvive for Hollow Cheeks: Texture Versus Volume

Skin texture and volume are different goals

Allergan Aesthetics, the manufacturer, describes Skinvive as hyaluronic acid delivered through microinjections into the dermis, a layer of the skin. It distinguishes this purpose from changing facial shape or volume.

The useful question is not simply whether a product is injected into the cheeks, but what change it is intended to make. Reducing roughness at the skin surface and changing the contour of a hollow cheek are different treatment goals.

What the research measured

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's 2023 approval information describes Skinvive's indication as intradermal injection to improve cheek skin smoothness in adults aged 21 and older. It reports that, in a clinical trial involving 209 participants, improvement in cheek skin smoothness lasted at least six months.

That finding is not evidence of correction of cheek hollowness. It also does not guarantee the same duration for everyone or mean that treatment should be repeated every six months. These findings and the indication come from U.S. approval information; they do not describe the scope of approval in South Korea.

Injection risks still matter

Even when the treatment goal fits, the risks need consideration. Allergan Aesthetics' safety information lists injection-site reactions such as swelling, bruising, and pain. It also warns of rare but serious complications associated with injection into a blood vessel, including skin necrosis (tissue death), vision impairment or blindness, and stroke.

According to that safety information, Skinvive must not be used in people with:

  • Previous anaphylaxis or a history of multiple severe allergies.
  • Allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins.
  • An allergy to lidocaine.

The manufacturer advises waiting until active inflammation or infection at the injection site is controlled before proceeding with treatment.

Start with the change you want

Our starting point is to separate the desired changes clearly. If hollow cheeks are your main concern, make that goal explicit rather than assuming that evidence of smoother skin also means added cheek volume. Discuss your allergy history and current skin condition with a medical professional when deciding whether treatment is appropriate.

Skin reactions and recovery time vary by individual. Consult a medical professional for an accurate assessment and an individualized treatment plan.
