A lifting treatment keeps stimulating collagen for months, but daily sun protection, avoiding cigarettes, and rechecking your skin before the next session are what decide how long the firmness actually holds.
The collagen a lifting treatment stimulates keeps rebuilding for months, but what you do afterward decides how long the firmness actually holds. Daily sun protection, staying away from cigarettes, and rechecking your skin before booking the next session are the three habits that matter most. None of them depend on a fixed calendar date.
I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of the Gangnam clinic at UH CELL. In consultations, the question I hear most often after a lifting treatment is simple: how long will this last? My answer is usually that the treatment itself is only half the story. What happens in daily life afterward carries the other half.
UV Exposure Undoes What the Treatment Builds
Lifting devices work by delivering heat energy into the skin to trigger new collagen production. Natural aging from age itself can't be stopped, but among the outside factors you can actually control, sun exposure does the most damage. A 2013 study from the University of Michigan Department of Dermatology, authored by Yong Li, Gary J. Fisher and colleagues and published in PLOS ONE, found that UV exposure activates an enzyme called MMP-1, which breaks down type I collagen, the main structural protein in the dermis. A 2003 photoaging review in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reached a similar conclusion, naming repeated UV exposure as the single most significant external driver of skin aging and pointing to sagging as one of its visible results.
Because of this, I tell patients to apply sunscreen starting the day after treatment, even on cloudy days and even indoors near windows. If you'll be outside for long stretches, a hat or umbrella alongside sunscreen makes a real difference, since sunscreen alone tends to wear off with sweat or simply isn't reapplied often enough.
What Smoking Costs a Lifting Result
The same 2003 JAAD review cites an earlier epidemiological study. Kadunce and colleagues, writing in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 1991, found that smoking was an independent risk factor for premature wrinkling, separate from sun exposure history. People with a smoking history of 50 pack-years or more were five times more likely to develop wrinkling than non-smokers, and wrinkling was most severe when heavy smoking and heavy sun exposure overlapped. That research measured wrinkling specifically, but since it points to a factor that accelerates skin aging generally, I recommend patients avoid smoking after a lifting treatment rather than treat it as a minor lifestyle detail.
Deciding on Your Next Session by Reassessing, Not by Calendar
How often someone needs a repeat session varies with age, skin thickness, and daily habits, so I don't lead with a fixed interval. At a follow-up visit, I check the degree of laxity and the current condition of the skin first, then we decide together whether to repeat the same treatment or add a different approach. I've written separately about which skincare ingredients to pause and which to resume after a lifting treatment in When Can You Restart Retinol After a Lifting Treatment?
FAQ
Can I get recovery care while staying at the hotel?
Guests staying at a UHC hotel can choose either a 30-minute session in the oxygen chamber or a vitamin IV drip at no charge. If you'd like both, the IV drip is 55,000 KRW. Our Gangnam clinic sits inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, so you can come down from your room directly. Full terms are listed on the promotions page at uhcell.com.
I had the treatment while traveling. Does aftercare change once I'm home?
The principles stay the same. Keep up daily sun protection and avoid smoking, and once your next visit is scheduled, we'll reassess your skin at that point and plan from there.
Is sunscreen alone enough?
Sunscreen loses effectiveness when too little is applied or when it's washed away by sweat. I recommend treating sunscreen as the baseline and adding physical protection, like a hat or umbrella, on days when sun exposure will be intense.
Individual skin response and recovery time vary. Please consult your physician for a diagnosis and treatment plan specific to you.
