Why We Treat Oxygen Therapy as a Recovery Convenience

Breathing concentrated oxygen inside a pressurized chamber raises the amount of oxygen dissolved in blood plasma, and additional dissolved oxygen is generally understood to support the body's own healing processes. The Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society, the professional body that sets clinical indications for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the United States, currently recognizes 14 approved indications for the treatment, concentrated in wound healing, decompression illness, and related medical conditions rather than cosmetic use.

Parnis and colleagues, writing an evidence-based review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2024, found that while a growing number of clinics promote hyperbaric oxygen therapy for skin rejuvenation, the current approved indications do not extend to aesthetic applications.
