What Actually Determines Downtime After a Lifting Treatment

Ultrasound and RF lifting downtime is usually redness and swelling settling within a day. We explain what drives recovery and plan it around your Seoul stay.

A lifting treatment with little downtime is not defined by a machine's brand name. It comes down to which skin layer the heat reaches and how the treatment protects the surface above that layer. Ultrasound and radiofrequency lifting typically produce redness and swelling that resolve within about a day, and we plan the treatment around whatever time you actually have left in Seoul.

What Actually Determines Downtime After a Lifting Treatment

When someone books a lifting consultation with us, the first thing we ask is how many days they have in the city. The answer changes which energy level and treatment area we choose, because recovery time follows the settings, not just the device.

We Start From the Calendar, Not the Machine

A short trip changes what we recommend before we even look at the skin. If a patient has one evening left before a flight, we treat a narrower area at a more conservative setting than we would for someone staying a full week. The device stays the same in both cases. What changes is how much tissue we heat and how aggressively, and that decision is what actually drives how long swelling lingers.

This is also why we ask about the return flight during the first consultation rather than after the treatment plan is set. Working backward from departure time, rather than forward from a generic recovery estimate, is what keeps a tight schedule realistic.

Heat That Bypasses the Surface

Ultrasound lifting devices focus their energy on the dermis and the SMAS layer underneath it, leaving the epidermis largely untouched. A 2025 narrative review by Pavicic and colleagues in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology described how microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) passes through the melanin-rich epidermis without depositing much heat there, which the authors linked to a lower risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in Fitzpatrick skin types III through VI. That is one reason we tend to lead with ultrasound-based options for patients from markets where deeper skin tones are common.

Sofwave uses a related approach but at a shallower depth. Sofwave Medical's own FDA clearance documentation describes its Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam technology as concentrating heat at roughly 1.5mm within the mid-dermis, with an integrated cooling mechanism protecting the skin surface during treatment. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the device for improving facial lines and wrinkles and for lifting the eyebrow, submental tissue, and neck. That combination of a shallow, protected treatment depth is part of why the surface reaction tends to be mild.

What the Recovery Studies Report

The reaction profile across these devices is fairly consistent in the published literature. A 2024 systematic review in Dermatologic Surgery pooled data from 19 studies covering 506 patients treated with microfocused ultrasound and reported that the most common reactions were transient swelling, redness, and post-procedure discomfort, none of which were described as lasting more than a few days.

Radiofrequency devices show a similar pattern over a longer track record. Weiss and colleagues published a retrospective analysis of more than 600 monopolar radiofrequency treatments in 2006, drawn from charts at the Maryland Laser, Skin and Vein Institute. They reported that redness and swelling resolved within 24 hours in the large majority of cases, with temporary side effects occurring in 2.7% of treatments and no permanent effects recorded. That paper is still widely referenced in later monopolar RF literature, in large part because of its size.

Every protocol leaves some swelling behind for a while. The duration is what differs between them, and that duration is what we schedule the rest of a patient's trip around.

Planning the Hours That Follow

Our Gangnam location sits on the second and third floors of the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel, so a patient does not need to travel between a treatment room and where they are resting afterward. Hotel guests receive a complimentary oxygen chamber session and a vitamin IV drip, which we build into the same-day schedule for patients whose flight timing is tight. We treat with Ultherapy PRIME, Thermage FLX, Sofwave, and OligioX, and Dr. Kim Yeonjin, an Ultherapy Z and Potenza key doctor, oversees diagnosis through treatment. Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreters are on staff for the consultation and aftercare instructions.

FAQ

Can I get a lifting treatment the night before a flight home?

Ultrasound and radiofrequency lifting are non-incisional, so most reactions are limited to redness and mild swelling. The anesthesia approach and whether we combine the treatment with an injectable can change that timeline, so we ask for your flight details during the consultation and set the treatment intensity around it.

Can I wear makeup the same day?

We recommend low-irritant products only while redness is still present. Whether makeup is appropriate the same day depends on how your skin is responding right after treatment, which we check before you leave the clinic.

Is it better to combine several treatments in one visit?

When one physician plans the full sequence, treatments can be sequenced so recovery windows do not overlap. We review your diagnosis first and split the plan between what happens that day and what we schedule for a later visit.
