Sofwave, Ulthera, and Thermage: Lifting Devices Work at Different Depths

Dr. Kyungsoo Kim explains how to choose between fine lines, elasticity, and contour-focused treatments.

One of the most common questions I hear during lifting consultations is whether Sofwave is better than Ulthera or Thermage. As a physician, I first explain that the answer is not about ranking devices. It is about identifying which layer of the face has weakened and what kind of change the patient needs.

Sofwave focuses on dermal elasticity and fine lines

Sofwave delivers ultrasound energy to the relatively superficial mid-dermis, helping stimulate collagen and elastin renewal. Its clinical role is best understood as a treatment for fine lines, skin texture, and early elasticity loss with limited surface disruption.

It may be suitable for patients who notice fine lines around the eyes or mouth, thinner skin, or a desire for a naturally firmer appearance rather than a dramatic contour change.

Ulthera and Thermage have different roles

Ulthera is generally used to target deeper fascial support and facial contour lifting. Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to improve skin firmness and texture. Sofwave sits in a different role, refining shallow laxity and fine lines rather than replacing every other lifting device.

This is why choosing the “best device” is less important than diagnosing the actual cause of sagging or laxity. Jawline laxity, thin skin, and heavier facial fat require different strategies.

Layered lifting begins with diagnosis

Modern lifting treatment is increasingly layered. The important question is not how many devices a clinic has, but how accurately the physician chooses the order, energy level, and treatment target.

In my consultations, I evaluate skin thickness, fine lines location, fat volume, jawline laxity, and available recovery time. Sofwave can be valuable for natural elasticity improvement in the right patient, but it is not the only answer for every face.
