Sofwave, Ultherapy PRIME, and Shurink all use ultrasound energy to heat tissue beneath the skin, but they differ in how deep that energy travels and how it is delivered. Mid-dermal laxity around 1.5mm is typically addressed with Sofwave, while sagging that extends into the SMAS fascia layer is more often evaluated with a focused ultrasound device such as Ultherapy or Shurink. When a fuller-looking jawline comes from fat or muscle volume rather than skin laxity, ultrasound lifting alone may not deliver the expected change, so identifying the cause comes before choosing a device.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic Gangnam. When a patient asks which treatment will make the face look slimmer, I don't start with a device name. I start by working out which layer is actually behind the change in the facial line.
Three Ultrasound Lifts, Three Target Depths
| Treatment | Energy Delivery | Primary Depth Targeted | Concerns Typically Addressed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sofwave | Parallel ultrasound beams (SUPERB) | Mid-dermis, about 1.5mm | Fine lines, reduced skin elasticity |
| Ultherapy PRIME | Real-time imaging-guided focused ultrasound | Selectable at 1.5mm, 3.0mm, or 4.5mm | Sagging that reaches the SMAS fascia |
| Shurink | Focused ultrasound (HIFU) | Dermal and subcutaneous tissue at the focal depth | Sagging, contour refinement |
Merz Aesthetics, the manufacturer of Ultherapy, explains that the device uses real-time visualization so the treating physician can confirm tissue structure before selecting a depth of 1.5mm, 3.0mm, or 4.5mm and delivering energy there. A 2025 narrative review on microfocused ultrasound published in PMC, the U.S. National Institutes of Health's literature database, describes this approach as creating small, focused thermal coagulation points above 60°C at the chosen depth, which then stimulates collagen remodeling.
Sofwave Medical's technology description takes a different path. According to the manufacturer, multiple parallel beams warm the mid-dermis at roughly 1.5mm evenly across a broader area, a cooling mechanism protects the skin surface during treatment, and the energy is designed to stay within the dermis rather than reach the fat layer beneath it.
Diagnosing What's Behind a Fuller-Looking Jawline
- Skin sags below the jawline and the border looks blurred. This usually points to weakened support in a deeper layer, and a focused ultrasound option is worth evaluating.
- Skin has thinned and fine lines or loss of elasticity show up first. This points to a dermal concern, which is why Sofwave is typically discussed for this pattern.
- Fat under the cheeks or chin, or a prominent jaw muscle, is adding volume. Ultrasound lifting alone may produce a smaller change than expected here, and I discuss other treatment options alongside it.
Some patients have overlapping concerns in both layers, and in that case a plan can be designed to work at more than one depth. Whether to combine approaches depends on skin thickness, prior procedure history, and how much recovery time is available.
What the Research Actually Supports
Sofwave Medical's 2023 announcement of its FDA clearance states the approved use covers improvement of facial wrinkles, eyebrow lift, and lifting of lax tissue under the chin and on the neck. A 2025 review published in PMC notes that Ultherapy first received FDA clearance for eyebrow lift in 2009, with the approved use later expanded to neck and submental lifting.
I'm cautious when discussing Korean-made HIFU devices such as Shurink. A 2024 pan-Asian consensus statement published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology points out that alternative HIFU devices, including Korean-manufactured systems, have fewer peer-reviewed studies supporting efficacy and safety compared with better-studied focused ultrasound platforms.
Timing of the assessment matters too. A clinical trial protocol for Ultherapy registered with ClinicalTrials.gov evaluated jawline contour and submental laxity change using photographs taken 90 days after treatment. That's why I describe expected change around the three-month mark rather than how the face looks right after the session.
If Ultherapy's imaging-guided approach fits what a consultation finds, the next practical question is shot count and price, which I walk through in What Determines Your Ultherapy Shot Count and Price?.
FAQ
Why do you ask about previous lifting treatments?
Repeated thermal energy at the same depth within a short interval can leave skin without enough time to recover. I ask when the last treatment happened and what type it was before deciding on depth and intensity for a new one.
Can this fit into a short stay in Seoul?
The PMC review describes focused ultrasound as a non-surgical option with a comparatively light recovery burden. Swelling and redness still vary by person, so I go over the expected timeline against a patient's return flight during consultation rather than assuming a fixed recovery window.
Does staying at the hotel include recovery care after treatment?
UH CELL Clinic Gangnam is located inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel. Guests staying at UHC hotels can choose one complimentary option between a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip; if both are used, the vitamin IV drip is 55,000 KRW. Exact conditions are listed on the clinic's promotion page, and I'd recommend confirming current terms before booking.
Before any of these treatments, it's worth reviewing what should be covered in your consultation. I outline that in What to Confirm Before Signing a Procedure Consent Form.
Individual skin response and recovery time vary. For a diagnosis and treatment plan suited to your case, please discuss it directly in a consultation.
