Toxin, ultrasound, and RF results follow different timelines. I explain when each one peaks and why your flight-day face is not the final result.

How Long Do Skin Procedure Results Actually Last in Korea?

TL;DR: How long a result lasts depends on which category of procedure you had. Neurotoxin injections typically hold for three months or longer, sometimes four to five months depending on the area and dose. Treatments that work by triggering new collagen, such as lifting devices, keep building for months after the appointment, with one systematic review tracking continued improvement out to a full year. The face you see on your flight home is a face still in recovery, not the finished result.

When a patient asks me how long a result will hold, I split the question into two separate moments before I answer: when the change becomes visible, and when it starts to fade. Patients who fold those two moments into one tend to underestimate how long a procedure actually lasts, because they judge the whole treatment by what they see in the mirror during the flight home.

Collagen-building treatments show their result late

Monopolar radiofrequency and microfocused ultrasound both deliver heat into the dermis and the layer beneath it. The heat contracts existing collagen immediately, then triggers new collagen production over the following months, which is why the visible result keeps changing well after the appointment. A 2023 systematic review in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, led by researcher Mark Contini, pooled outcome data from 16 eligible studies on microfocused ultrasound for facial skin tightening. At the 90-day mark, 92% of patients showed improvement by investigator assessment, and the pooled patient-reported score kept rising afterward, from 42% at 90 days to 53% at 360 days.

Monopolar radiofrequency follows a different curve. Patient-reported improvement in a 2024 study published in the journal Cosmetics peaked around 12 weeks and eased slightly by 24 weeks, a decline pattern the ultrasound data did not show over the same window.

Before asking how long a result will last, ask which layer of tissue the device reaches and by what mechanism, since that determines the shape of the curve far more than which machine performed the treatment.

Injectable procedures depend on how the interval is planned

Timothy C. Flynn, in a 2010 review published in the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, concluded that botulinum toxin effects typically last three months or longer, extending to four or five months depending on the treated area, dose, and formulation. A 2016 review by the Global Aesthetics Consensus Group, led by dermatologist Hema Sundaram, described a broader shift in botulinum toxin practice toward scheduling maintenance treatment before muscle activity has fully returned, rather than waiting for the effect to disappear.

That timing detail matters more than most patients expect. Waiting for the effect to disappear completely before the next session resets the muscle activity pattern each time, instead of building on it. Retreating on a slightly earlier interval preserves more of the accumulated benefit across repeat sessions.

Short stays create an optical illusion about the outcome

Patients who visit for two to seven days generally board their return flight while some swelling and redness are still resolving. Our Gangnam location sits inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel building, so patients recover in their room without a separate trip across the city, and the oxygen chamber and vitamin IV drip are available at no charge to hotel guests. The measurable result still depends on elapsed time and tissue response, and that assessment happens after you are home, once swelling has resolved and the treated tissue has had time to develop.

That is why I ask every patient to keep the diagnostic notes and device settings from the treatment day. On a return visit, whether in Seoul or with a different provider, those notes are the only reliable basis for adjusting the interval and intensity next time, instead of starting the diagnosis over from nothing. I cover how to time that follow-up assessment itself in a separate piece on post-procedure follow-up timing.

FAQ

Is there anything that extends how long results last?

Lifestyle factors play a real role, though not a precisely quantifiable one. Sun exposure and inadequate sleep are both associated with slower collagen turnover, so I recommend consistent sunscreen use and regular sleep during the recovery window. I would not promise a specific number of extra weeks from any single habit, because the evidence does not support that level of precision.

Why do two patients with the same device get different results?

Skin thickness, subcutaneous fat volume, how much structural support the underlying tissue still has, and prior treatment history all change how the same energy setting is absorbed. That is why the diagnostic step before treatment matters more than the device name.

When should I contact a clinic if a result seems to be fading unusually fast?

If fading is accompanied by redness or pain, if only one localized area changes abruptly, or if a firm lump has not softened after several weeks, that is not an ordinary fading timeline. Do not attempt to treat it yourself; get it examined in person.'
