Free or Paid, That's Not the Question to Ask First

When people write to us, one of the first questions is almost always whether our consultation is free. We understand why cost comes up first. But the fee itself tells you very little. What actually determines whether a consultation is worth your time is whether it includes a real skin diagnosis before anyone suggests a specific treatment. A free consultation that skips the doctor and goes straight to a treatment name is not a better deal. A paid consultation that includes a genuine physical exam is not a worse one. The price tag and the value are two separate things, and confusing them is an easy way to waste a short trip to Seoul.

Why the Price of a Consultation Doesn't Tell You Much

Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare reported that foreign patient visits reached 1.17 million in 2024, a 93.2% jump over the previous year, and that dermatology alone accounted for 56.6% of all specialty visits, the fastest-growing category at 194.9% growth from 2023. That kind of demand growth changes how clinics compete for patients. Free consultations, discount events, and package pricing have become common tools to attract first-time visitors, especially those booking from overseas before they even land in Korea. None of that is inherently dishonest, but it does mean a "free consultation" label is often a marketing decision rather than a clinical one. It does not, by itself, tell you whether a doctor will examine your skin or whether a staff member will simply walk you through a menu of procedures.

The reverse is also true. A consultation fee is not a red flag. When that fee covers time with the treating physician, a skin measurement, and a review of your treatment history, the cost reflects the diagnosis itself, not an entry fee to get a sales pitch.

What a Diagnosis-First Consultation Actually Checks

For patients visiting Korea on a short trip, usually a matter of days, three things matter more than whether money changed hands at the front desk:

• Whether the doctor examines you directly, rather than a consultation being handled entirely by non-medical staff
• Whether there is an actual process for checking skin thickness, sensitivity, and prior procedure history before any treatment is proposed
• Whether an interpreter is present for the full consultation, rather than the conversation being reduced to a translation app

These three checks matter more for international patients than for local ones because the margin for error is smaller. A patient staying two to seven days does not have room to discover after the fact that a treatment plan was built without knowing their skin history.

How We Structure Consultations at Our Gangnam Location

At our Gangnam location, the diagnosis comes before the treatment plan, not after. Our lead physician there completed graduate studies at Seoul National University and trained at Seoul National University Hospital, and currently serves as an Allergan faculty member for filler and botulinum toxin injectables. We also keep Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreting staff on site at the Gangnam location, so the diagnosis is explained directly and in full, without depending on a translation app to carry technical detail. Yes. The consultation and the decision to proceed are separate steps. You can review your diagnosis first and decide afterward whether to go ahead with a treatment.

How long does a consultation usually take?

It depends on your skin condition and what needs to be checked. A consultation that includes a direct physical exam by the doctor will generally take longer than one that does not.

Can I be consulted without bringing my own interpreter?

At our Gangnam location, Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreting staff are on site, so you do not need to bring your own interpreter to be consulted in full.

Can treatment happen on the same day as the consultation?

In some cases, yes, depending on what the diagnosis finds. In other cases, treatment is scheduled separately to allow time for recovery planning around your travel dates.
