Why Botox Should Never Be Treated Casually, Even When It Is Affordable

Representative Director Kim Kyungsoo explains area-specific effects, side effects, and resistance management

Botox has become one of the most familiar aesthetic treatments because the procedure is quick and its effects can become visible relatively soon. In my consultations, however, I always begin with the same point: easier access and lower prices should never make the decision to undergo treatment casual. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medication that temporarily reduces nerve signaling to targeted muscles. The outcome depends on an accurate anatomical assessment and careful dose planning.

Understand how expression lines are treated

Muscles that contract repeatedly with facial expressions create lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and around the eyes. Botox can reduce excessive contraction, soften dynamic wrinkles, and help slow their progression. Filler, by contrast, restores volume to hollow areas. Treating both concerns in the same way simply because they are described as wrinkles can create a gap between expectations and results.

A good result comes from precision, not from using more

I do not assess every face using a single formula. I examine frontalis muscle strength, eyebrow position, the direction of glabellar muscle movement, movement around the eyes when smiling, and the thickness of the masseter muscles. Even with the same forehead lines, too much toxin in someone who relies on the forehead muscles to open the eyes can cause heaviness or a constrained appearance. The muscles around the mouth require an even more conservative approach because their functions are complex.

Side effects often depend more on injection site and dose

If the medication spreads to an unintended muscle, facial expressions may appear unnatural or asymmetrical. Possible adverse effects include temporary bruising and swelling, eyelid drooping, and difficulty with speech or mouth movement. Before treatment, patients should accurately disclose previous procedures, medications, neuromuscular conditions, and pregnancy or breastfeeding status.

Manage treatment intervals and total dose

Repeating treatment at very short intervals or treating multiple areas with excessive doses may increase the risk of reduced responsiveness. It is important to track the product used, previous doses, and treatment intervals. I recommend observing when the effect begins and how long it lasts, then adjusting only what is necessary.

Three points to confirm during consultation

First, determine whether the concern is actually caused by muscle movement. Second, explain the appearance you want and the functions that must be preserved. Third, ask about possible adverse effects and how they would be managed, not only the expected benefits. Botox can be highly useful when administered accurately to the right patient, but it is not the same solution for every wrinkle or every face.

I am Dr. Kyungsoo Kim. I evaluate facial structure and movement, skin condition, and lifestyle before recommending a procedure. Selecting only the necessary treatment areas and the minimum effective dose based on an individual assessment is the foundation of both safety and natural-looking results.
