Sauna and Hot Springs After a Procedure: When Is It Safe?

There's no single date for returning to a sauna or hot spring after a procedure. I explain why heat should be avoided right after treatment and what to check before you go back.

There is no single date I can give you for returning to a sauna, jjimjilbang, or hot spring after a procedure. It depends on which procedure you had and how your skin is recovering, not on a fixed number of days.

Sauna and Hot Springs After a Procedure: When Is It Safe?

Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic Gangnam. Patients often ask me this question right before a hot spring trip or a regular sauna visit, so I want to walk through how I actually think about it.

Why heat should be avoided right after a procedure

Right after a procedure, strong heat on the treated skin is one of the things I ask patients to avoid. A Joongdo Ilbo report covering a safe-use guide for medical lasers, published by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety together with the Korean Dermatological Association and the Korean Dermatologists' Association, notes that patients should stay away from jjimjilbangs and saunas after laser treatment, since exposing the skin to strong heat during recovery is discouraged. The same report also advises against drinking and smoking after laser treatment, because both can slow healing. It adds that temporary redness, flaking, swelling, pain, or a burning sensation can appear after laser treatment, and that patients should return to the clinic if these symptoms persist.

This is the reasoning behind "wait before you go back to heat": it isn't an arbitrary rule, it's tied to how the treated skin is recovering.

What to check before you go back

Before booking that sauna or hot spring visit, I ask patients to check:

  • Which procedure you had, which area was treated, and the heat-avoidance period you were given for that specific procedure
  • Whether redness, swelling, warmth, or scabbing is still present on the treated area
  • Whether you're still feeling pain or a burning sensation at the treatment site

If any of these are still present, I'd rather you wait and check with us again than guess at a date.

If you already have a hot spring trip or sauna visit planned, tell me about it during the consultation. Some procedures, including laser treatments, carry a period where strong heat should be avoided right after, so I plan the treatment schedule around that trip rather than the other way around.

Planning your recovery around your schedule

Our Gangnam clinic is inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel building. Guests staying at the hotel can choose one complimentary option, either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip; using both brings the vitamin IV to 55,000 won. Because the clinic sits inside the hotel, patients who are staying there can move between treatment and recovery without a separate trip across the city. I go through what that flow looks like in more detail in Gangnam Lifting and Anti-Aging: See the Full Treatment-to-Recovery Flow.

Skin response and recovery time vary from person to person. For your specific procedure and timeline, including when it's safe to return to heat, please check with us directly during a consultation.
