Freckles and melasma respond very differently to the same laser, so the outcome in Gangnam depends on diagnosing the two separately before treatment. Dr. Kim Yeonjin of UH CELL's Gangnam branch explains what short-stay patients from Taiwan should expect from each pigment type and how recovery is managed on-site.
What separates a good outcome from a disappointing one in Gangnam freckle and melasma laser treatment is whether the two pigment types are diagnosed separately before any device is chosen. Freckles tend to respond well to laser, while melasma improves more slowly under the same settings and can darken again if the skin is overstimulated, which is why melasma needs to be planned across multiple sessions rather than one strong pass. If you're visiting from Taiwan for a short stay, it's worth setting your expectations for this visit and your recovery plan together before you book.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL's Gangnam branch. Many patients from Taiwan come to Seoul specifically for 雀斑 (freckle) and 肝斑 (melasma) laser treatment, and there are a few things worth knowing before choosing where to have it done.
Freckles and melasma respond differently to the same laser
Han Zheng, Gang Qiao, and Yong Zhang, of the Laser Center at Hangzhou Third People's Hospital in China, reported in a 2023 study that patients with both freckles and melasma were treated with a 1064nm Q-switched laser using a large spot size and low energy, over 10 to 15 sessions. Freckles cleared almost completely, with a 100% effective rate. Melasma improved far less, at a 39.4% effective rate, in the same patients on the same device. That gap is the reason we diagnose which areas are freckles and which are melasma before deciding how to treat either one, rather than starting from a device name.
Melasma needs a plan for both speed and irritation
A meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials published in the Journal of Cosmetic Medicine found that laser produced faster improvement in melasma than chemical peels, but also came with more side effects, including post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is why, for melasma specifically, we favor a staged approach that controls irritation instead of one aggressive session.
Setting expectations for a short stay
The Hangzhou study spaced its sessions 10 to 15 days apart. If you're staying 2 to 7 days, it's realistic to treat this visit as the first step in a longer melasma course rather than the whole course.
If the skin is sun-reddened, calming care such as LDM or cryo-cell treatment before toning is generally advisable.
The Hangzhou study also paired laser sessions with gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and strict sun protection before and after treatment. Keep up sun protection after you return home.
If redness or stinging lasts more than a few days, or the pigment looks darker rather than lighter, get it checked rather than treating it yourself.
