Melasma treatment during a short Seoul visit works best as a plan, not a single fix: diagnosis to separate melasma from sunspots, a first session sized to your skin's reaction, and a return-home routine of sun protection and follow-up timing. Dr. Kim Yeonjin explains why session counts come after diagnosis, not before booking.
Melasma tends to recur, so a realistic plan for a short Seoul visit covers three things: a diagnosis that separates melasma from ordinary sunspots or post-inflammatory marks, a first treatment sized to what your skin can tolerate during this trip, and a follow-up routine you continue after you fly home. How many sessions you'll eventually need comes after that diagnosis, not before you book.
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic's Gangnam branch. When an international patient asks me about melasma, the first thing I set is the boundary between what we do during this trip and what continues after you leave.
Why Melasma Rarely Ends in One Visit
A 2024 review in PMC, the U.S. National Institutes of Health's full-text article archive, describes melasma as a pigment disorder with a complex cause and a strong tendency to come back. The review names ongoing sun exposure as a leading driver of that recurrence. Its recommended order of care starts with reviewing risk factors and committing to strict sun protection, then adds topical agents, chemical peels, and laser or light treatment on top of that foundation.
The American Academy of Dermatology gives similar guidance: for a patient who is already using topical treatment and sun protection consistently, adding laser or light treatment can improve the result further. Laser adds onto topical care and sun protection that's already underway.
Diagnosis Comes Before the Treatment Plan
I start by checking whether a brown patch is actually melasma, or whether it's an ordinary sunspot or a mark left behind by a healed breakout. Two patches can look the same shade of brown and still need very different intensity and spacing of treatment. Coverage of the American Academy of Dermatology's 2025 annual meeting described low-power Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers and pico lasers, run at reduced energy settings, being used for patients with more melanin-rich skin. We apply that same conservative logic here: toning or peel-type treatments are chosen and dosed based on how a patient's skin actually reacts, not on a fixed protocol.
What Happens During Your Stay
Our Gangnam branch sits inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building, and treatment takes place in a private room. Japanese, Chinese, and English-speaking interpreting staff are on site, so the diagnosis conversation and the after-care instructions don't have to go through a language gap.
UHC hotel guests can choose one recovery amenity free of charge: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. Using both in the same stay means the vitamin IV drip carries a 55,000 KRW charge. Full conditions are listed on our official promotions page.
A short stay turns this into a scheduling question as much as a treatment one. For a 3 to 5 day window around a return flight, our guide on scheduling a 5-day Seoul skin trip backward from your flight walks through how to sequence appointments so you have time to see how your skin reacts before you leave.
Deciding Session Count and Interval After You Fly Home
How quickly melasma responds varies a lot from patient to patient, so I don't promise a session count at the first visit. What we do settle in that first consultation is the timing of your next visit, the sun protection method you'll use once you're home, and which irritants to avoid in the meantime. If you're also curious how long the effects of a Korea-based treatment tend to hold once you're back home, we cover that separately in how long skin treatments from Korea really last.
When to Contact the Clinic
If redness after treatment lasts more than a few days, or if a patch looks darker instead of fading, please see a medical provider near you and let us know as well. That combination isn't the expected pattern of recovery, and it's worth having someone look at it in person.
FAQ
Can I get melasma treatment the day before I fly home?
It depends on the treatment type and how your skin is doing that day. I generally recommend scheduling the first treatment early in your stay, so there's a chance to check your skin's reaction once before you leave Seoul.
If melasma comes back, does that mean my treatment failed?
Recurrence is a feature of melasma itself, not a sign that a treatment failed. That's exactly why we build maintenance visits and sun protection into the plan starting from the first consultation, rather than treating one session as the finish line.
Does pregnancy or hormonal medication affect melasma?
The 2024 PMC review lists pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and genetic predisposition alongside UV exposure as factors associated with melasma. Please tell me about any medication you're taking, including hormonal treatment, when we meet for your consultation.
