Makeup timing after a Seoul procedure depends on epidermis condition, not the treatment's name. Needle-only injections may allow same-day light coverage, microneedling asks for 24 hours, and peels or lasers need the flaking and crusting to finish first. Dr. Kim Yeonjin of UH CELL Clinic's Gangnam branch explains how to plan a short trip around these three timelines.
When you can put makeup back on after a procedure depends on how far the epidermis has healed. Needle-only injections that never break the surface broadly allow light coverage the same day, treatments that open microscopic channels typically ask for 24 hours, and peels or lasers that shed and regrow the epidermis are ready once flaking and crusting have finished. If you have a return flight or an event booked, I plan the procedure order around these three timelines and each patient's actual healing pace.
I'm Kim Yeonjin, lead physician at UH CELL Clinic's Gangnam branch. Patients on a short Seoul trip ask me this question more than almost any other: when can I wear makeup again? Before I answer, I check one thing first: is there still an open point on the treated area.
Injections that stay under the surface: often the same day
Treatments like botulinum toxin place a small needle into the muscle layer without leaving a broad wound on the surface. The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on botulinum toxin therapy notes that patients can apply makeup as soon as they leave the treatment room, with one caution: press or rub the makeup in gently rather than working it into the skin, and hold off on strenuous activity for about two hours. The limit here is how much pressure reaches the injection site during application. I generally suggest patting product on with a sponge instead of rubbing it in with fingers or a brush for the rest of that day.
Treatments that open microscopic channels: plan for 24 hours
Microneedling is a different case. The needles create thousands of tiny channels through the epidermis, and those channels stay open long enough that anything applied on top can be pushed into them. The American Academy of Dermatology's patient guidance on microneedling specifically advises waiting 24 hours before applying makeup, since product sitting in an unclosed channel raises the risk of irritation or infection. Pinpoint marks or light bruising along the needle path are also common. The Academy notes that bruising from injectable and needle-based treatments typically resolves within about a week, so if a photo shoot or event sits close to the procedure date, I factor that week into the schedule before I factor in the makeup question.
Peels and lasers that resurface the epidermis: judge by skin state
Chemical peels and resurfacing lasers work by removing part of the epidermis so a fresher layer can regenerate underneath, and that regrowth pace is what should set each patient's makeup timeline. The Academy's chemical peel guidance gives healing windows of roughly 1 to 7 days for a light peel, 7 to 14 days for a medium peel, and 14 to 21 days for a deep peel, with makeup generally appropriate the next day after a light peel, around 5 to 7 days after a medium peel, and only after at least 14 days for a deep peel. Covering skin while it is still flaking or crusted can settle color unevenly once the new layer finishes forming, so I look at how the skin is actually healing before I look at the date on the calendar.
Sequencing a fixed itinerary around these three timelines
For a trip of two or three nights, I start every consultation by asking about the return flight and any fixed plans, then place any treatment that opens the epidermis earlier in the stay and reserve the later days for recovery. Our Gangnam branch sits on the second floor of UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, so patients can move from the treatment room to their hotel room without leaving the building. UHC hotel guests may choose one complimentary recovery option, either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip; using both is available with the vitamin IV priced at 55,000 KRW. Japanese, Chinese, and English-speaking staff are on site at the Gangnam branch, so questions that come up during recovery can be answered without leaving the same building.
Can I apply sunscreen on the day of the procedure?
While the treated area still has an open channel or a broken surface, I recommend physical protection, a hat or staying indoors, rather than applying any product. Once the surface has closed, we talk through which sunscreen formula to start with based on how the skin is healing.
Is it fine to cover a bruise with makeup?
A bruise is bleeding under the skin, so covering it is fine once the surface itself is closed. The concern is pressure: pressing hard to blend out a dark bruise can slow healing underneath, so applying it gently protects the healing skin underneath, whatever the bruise's color.
When can I go back to my normal cleansing routine?
While the epidermis is recovering, I suggest a rinse with lukewarm water rather than scrubbing or using exfoliating cleansers. Once flaking has resolved on its own, going back to a normal routine is straightforward.
